Key Responsibilities
1. Applied Livestock Nutrition & Ration Formulation
Formulate, evaluate, and adjust ruminant rations using NDS (Nutrition Dynamic Systems) software and other nutritional modeling tools.
Analyze forage tests, feed ingredient profiles, and production data to develop balanced rations that optimize milk production, growth, reproduction, and feed conversion efficiency.
Interpret laboratory analyses of feed samples and recommend adjustments based on nutrient composition, digestibility, and economic considerations.
Conduct nutritional diagnostics through on-farm herd evaluations, identifying deficiencies, metabolic risks, and performance constraints.
Present detailed nutritional reports and provide scientific justification for feeding recommendations.
Monitor production responses and revise rations based on measurable outcomes.
2. Research, Innovation & Product Development
Review scientific literature, technical publications, and industry research to identify advancements in ruminant nutrition and feed technology.
Contribute to the research, development, and reformulation of premixes, mineral supplements, feed additives, and specialty feeds.
Participate in field trials and evaluation of new feed technologies.
Analyze on-farm performance data to assess efficacy of nutritional programs and new products.
Provide technical feedback to management and product development teams based on field results.
Promote adoption of validated, science-based feed technologies.
3. Livestock Production Systems Analysis
Assess feeding systems including TMR mixers, robotic feeders, computerized feeding systems, and automated milking systems to ensure proper calibration and nutrient delivery accuracy.
Interpret production metrics including milk components, feed efficiency, health parameters, and reproduction performance.
Evaluate farm management practices affecting animal health, housing, cropping systems, forage quality, quota management, and sustainability.
Provide recommendations to improve herd performance, production efficiency, and economic return.
Support ESG and sustainability initiatives including greenhouse gas mitigation strategies and environmental nutrient management planning.
4. Client Advisory & Technical Consultation
Serve as a technical advisor to livestock producers, providing science-based recommendations on nutrition, feed management, herd health, genetics, and production optimization.
Deliver consultative support grounded in research-based nutritional principles.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including senior nutritionists, feed specialists, and subject matter experts.
Translate complex scientific information into practical on-farm applications.
Develop long-term advisory relationships through consistent technical support and performance monitoring.
5. Sales Development & Account Growth
Support company sales growth by identifying opportunities to expand feed, premix, and service offerings within existing accounts.
Actively prospect new business within the assigned territory, maintaining a targeted list of priority prospect accounts.
Work with management to develop and execute strategies for acquiring and converting key prospects.
Conduct regular farm visits to identify opportunities for nutritional, management, or product improvements that support both client performance and business growth.
Introduce and promote new premixes, feed products, feed additives, and services to clients and prospects.
Ensure client concerns related to nutrition, feed products, or management are addressed promptly to maintain strong account relationships.
Continue developing technical expertise and consultative sales skills by working alongside senior nutrition consultants.
6. Business Development & Knowledge Transfer
Identify opportunities where improved nutritional strategies can enhance production and profitability.
Develop and maintain professional relationships with dairy and beef producers.
Participate in industry conferences, seminars, trade shows, and professional meetings to disseminate technical knowledge.
Contribute technical articles and educational materials to industry publications.
Maintain detailed production and performance records for assigned accounts.
7. Professional Standards & Regulatory Compliance
Ensure all feed formulations comply with Canadian feed regulations and industry standards.
Maintain accurate scientific documentation and reporting.
Uphold ethical standards in research application and client advisory services.
Participate in professional development through organizations such as:
American Dairy Science Association (ADSA)
Nutrition Council of the Animal Nutrition Association of Canada (ANAC)
Qualifications
Required:
Master’s Degree in Animal Science, with preference given to candidates specializing in Ruminant or Dairy Nutrition.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in the dairy or beef industry, including roles involving livestock production, on-farm operations, technical advisory, or agricultural sales and service.
Experience formulating rations and good working knowledge of NDS software
A true passion for agriculture and the dairy/beef industry
Highly developed interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills
Willingness to learn and ability to quickly understand nutritional and sales knowledge
A valid Canadian Driver's License is required
Able to travel within your territory 5 days a week
